Title History

Last updated: September 11, 2026

Title History records a person's title changes over time directly on their profile in Bridgit. Each time a title is updated, Bridgit closes the previous entry and opens a new one - preserving the full trail of a person's career progression. From the current entry's start date, Bridgit calculates Time in Title, displayed the same way company and industry tenure are shown.

Key capabilities:

  • Maintains a dated record of all title changes instead of overwriting previous values

  • Calculates and displays time in current title on profiles, in Smart Suggestions, and on the People list

  • Prompts for an effective date when a title is changed, closing the old entry and starting the new one

  • Supports manual entry of past titles and bulk loading of history at setup

  • Applies Newly Promoted and New Hire tags to profiles and Smart Suggestions previews

  • Exposes time in current title as a sortable, exportable column on the People list

Eligibility

  • Available to all users with existing view or edit permissions on people profiles

  • No additional configuration or permissions required

How to Use

Updating a title and recording the change date

  1. Navigate to the People section in the main navigation.

  2. Open the person's profile.

  3. Edit the Title field.

  4. When prompted, enter the date the title change took effect. This date closes the previous title entry and starts the new one.

  5. If the effective date is unknown, save without it - the date can be added later.

Viewing title history

  2. Scroll to the Title History section, located under Employment Dates.

  3. Each entry displays a title, start date, end date, and time in current title for the active entry.

Adding past titles manually

Common Workflows

Assessing promotion readiness: Use the Time in Title column on the People list or the profile view to identify how long someone has held their current role. Filter or sort to surface candidates who have been in their title long enough to be considered for advancement.

Evaluating staffing fit in Smart Suggestions: When filling a role, Smart Suggestions displays time in current title inline alongside each suggested person. The Newly Promoted tag (shown for anyone in their current title under three months with two or more titles) provides an immediate signal before placing someone in a high-stakes position.

Bulk loading history at account setup: If your organization is setting up Bridgit for the first time or onboarding a large roster, title history can be loaded in bulk. On day one, history starts empty and fills in going forward - Bridgit does not backfill dates that aren't provided.

Common Questions

Q: What happens to titles that were updated before this feature was available?

History starts empty for all profiles on the release date and builds going forward. Bridgit does not guess or backfill past title changes that were overwritten before this feature existed.

Q: Is the effective date required when changing a title?

No. You can save a title change without an effective date and add it later from the Title History section on the profile.

Q: What triggers the Newly Promoted tag?

The tag applies to anyone who has two or more titles on record and has been in their current title for fewer than three months.

Q: What triggers the New Hire tag?

The tag applies to any profile with a hire date within the last three months. It appears on the profile and in Smart Suggestions previews.

Q: Can I edit or delete a historical title entry after it's been saved?

Individual entries in Title History can be updated from the profile. If you need to correct a date or title, open the entry in the Title History section and edit it directly.

Q: Where does time in current title appear?

It appears on the person's profile, inline in Smart Suggestions when you're filling a role, and as a sortable, exportable column on the People list.

Best Practices

  • Record the effective date of a title change at the time of the update rather than leaving it blank — accurate dates make time-in-role calculations reliable.

  • Use the Newly Promoted tag in Smart Suggestions as a signal when assigning someone to a senior or high-visibility role; it indicates they are still early in that title.

  • For accounts without tiered titles, sort by Time in Title on the People list to distinguish experienced staff from those newer to the same role.

  • If bulk-loading history at setup, prioritize providing start dates for current titles so time-in-role calculations are accurate from day one.
